Team Sports Win Twice
Two established Kupuna teams came to Panaewa looking for their first 2011 win,
Pu'uwai Opio and Team Sports.  Team Sports took the first game, 12-8, on strong hitting
from Keevil Ide, 4 for 4 and Walter Leite 3 for 4 but it wasn't easy.  Les Estrella led off
the game, for Opio, with a home run and Opio jumped to an early lead, taking a 6-3
advantage to the third.  In the bottom of that frame Bobby Duyao hammered a two run
home run and Team Sports dropped a five spot on pitcher Buffy Kehakelii and Opio.
Both teams equaled the other with two in the fourth but Opio stopped scoring and Team
Sports continued, adding two in the sixth. bringing the final to 12 - 8.

homered with two on in the first, Rodney Baculpo added a two run shot in the fourth,
Gary Lenowitz had a 4 for 4 game and Walter Leite went 3 for 4, in Team Sports 19-8
victory.  In a losing cause, Opio's Mike Texeria matched Macanas with his own three run
shot in the first.   But after putting up four in the first,  Opio's offense sputtered and only
managed only four more runs, including a solo shot by Reuben Soriano in the third, while
Team Sports put up three in the third, fives in the fourth and sixth on their way to an
easy victory.

Pomaika'i Big Winner in Duel of the Champions
The second double header at Panaewa, on Saturday, featured two powerhouses of the
Kupuna league, 2010 East Division Champ Hilo Pomaika'i and the Hawaii County
Tournament Division I, 2010 winner, the Onomea Rangers.
In game one Pomoaka'i scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead
and  held on to deal the Rangers their first loss of 2011.  The game was a real nail biter
as Pomaikai held 1-0  lead through four.  In their half of the fifth Onomea awoke and
scored the maximum runs allowed, five, taking a 5-1 lead.  That lead held until
Pomaika'i's sixth inning heroics.

second contest.  Pomaika'i got home runs from Dan Ayala, Jessie Kaawaloa and Don

Punatics Take a Deuce From the Aces
The two new entries in the Kupuna softball league squared off for a doubleheader in
Pāpai'kou on Saturday.   In the first contest  the Punatics jumped out to an early 5-0
lead, highlighted by a three run homer by left fielder Garrett Angelich, in the first.   But
the Aces stayed close, shutting down the Punatics offense, turning a  pair of inning
ending double plays and plating a run of their own .  Lead by Ray Todd's two run homer
in the fifth, the Punatics pulled away scoring four in that frame.  The Aces' offense
finally showed some life, scoring three in the fifth and seventh but it was too little too
late.  Final Punatics 11, Aces 7.

The second game was a see-saw battle with the lead changing four times.   The Aces
started strong scoring four in the first.  The lead didn't last though, as Punatic first
baseman, John Seastrom, hit a grand slam homer, in the second, putting the Punatics
up 8-5.  But the Aces still had something up their sleeve, in the fourth, timely hitting by
Guy Howard and Charles Plunkett pulled the Aces even 10-10.  Unfortunately, for the
Aces, the well went dry as pitcher Denny Higgins and the Puna defense dealt the Aces
goose eggs in the last three innings as the Punatics added five, winning 15-10.
