Opening Date 2/12/2011
The Hawai'i Kupuna opened the 2011 season with eleven games all across the Island. In
the East Division there were no real big surprises Saturday as 2010 league champs Hilo
Pomaika'i TKOed Team Sports twice 24-3 and 19-7. The Onomea Rangers bested
Kupuna Pride both games 15-9 and 10-5. The Homomu Rockets split with a much
improved Waiakea Seniors team, game one went to Waiakea 15-12, the Rockets took
game two 12-6. Ku'ikahi took two from one of the two new entries in the league, the
Papa'ikou Aces, 17-1 and 13-6. Hui O Na Kolohe squeaked by their nemesis Pu'uwai
Opio, in game one 15 - 13 and TKOed them the second game 20 - 5. The new Puna
team, the Punatics, lost two to the always strong Onipa'a Iron Birds, 16 - 1 and 11 - 2 but
the Puna entry looked good doing it in their distinctive purple uniforms. And of course the
best part of the day was the after game potlucks!
Punatics vs Aces 2/19/11
The two new entries in the Kupuna softball league squared off for a doubleheader in
Pāpai'kou on Saturday. The team in purple, the Punatics. came out on top twice. In
game one the Punatics took an early lead with a five spot in the bottom of the first,
highlighted by a three run homer by left fielder Garrett Angelich. The Aces stayed close
by scoring a run in the first and shutting down the Punatics by turning double plays in the
second and third. Lead by Ray Todd's two run homer in the fifth, the Punatics pulled
away scoring one in the fourth and four in the fifth. But the Aces began to solve pitcher
winning pitcher Denny Higgins mastery, by scoring three in the fifth and three more in the
seventh, with some timely hitting by Tom Repppuhn and Mark Pistolese but came up short
in the end, losing, 11-7. Martin Esteban took the loss.
The second game was a see-saw battle, with the lead changing four times. The Aces
took a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the second when Punatic number three hitter, John
Seastrom, hit a grand slam home run putting the Punatics up 7-5. The Puna team added
another run in the second and two in the third making it 10-5 after three. But the Aces
wouldn't stay down, they came back with 5 of their own in the top of the fourth, with timely
hitting by Guy Howard and Charles Plunkett making it 10-10. But the Punatics again
pulled away with 4 in the bottom of the fourth and one in the 6th, while Higgins and the
Puna defense dealt the Aces goose eggs in the last three innings. The final being 15-10
Punatics. Denny Higgins took the win and Martin Esteban took the loss.
